Having More Than One Blog?

January 22, 2010
By Jenny

I realize that many have more than one blog; I write for a few of my own and guest post for others.  I originally set up this blog to help others learn as I learned.  Letting them know tips and new things I have learned along the way during my online experience.  Throughout this mission, I have noticed that I have lost my own personality along the way.  Sure I can add things to this blog to add more personality, but I have had thoughts of starting a more personal blog, sort of a mishmash of whatever I want to write.

My conundrum lies in the time and effort to write consistently for another blog.  My thoughts are that if I am just writing what I want to write without trying to instruct or advise as I learn that it may be easier to write for.  After saying that I have read many posts that suggest that having more than one blog you write for consistently is a bad idea.

Here are the pros and cons I have thought of when thinking about having more than one blog I write for often:

Pros:

My true personality can come out

I have a wider range of topics to write about

It may be easier to write for if I am just ALL ME

Cons:

Time Management

Not being able to put all my focus into full development of one blog

Not being able to satisfy my readers with quality information as I normally could

While the pros and cons are just brainstorming, I feel that perhaps having a blog where my personality can fully shine through may be a good thing.

I have also considered the option of finding a way to still stay with the theme of this blog and input my personality into the blog a little more than I have.

So I ask you for your opinions, do you have more than one blog, would you recommend it, any pros and cons you would like to share?

I run three active blogs, but I tried to maintain 5 before I decided to retire and idle out 2 of them. I also help admin my wife’s 3 blogs, and guest post on half a dozen other blogs.

I like that you can spread different blogs for different topics, but definitely a con is that you cannot promote all of your blogs the same, so one blog tends to get most of the promotion while the others are left neglected more often.

Time management is definitely a big concern, I personally could never find the time to write a personal blog, that would just be impossible, but it would be so fun to just not worry about anything and write what I want.

If it was just about finding the time and desire to write, it wouldn’t really be that hard to run multiple blogs.

The problems start when you try to promote the blogs through link building, social networking and the like. That stuff takes longer than the actually writing does. If your blog(s) earn enough income to pay someone for at least some of the promotional side of things or advertise on popular sites, I think it could be quite viable to run perhaps 3 or 4 blogs and post new content on each blog every 1-2 days. Of course that is assuming that you don’t have a “real job” doing something else too.

All that said, a friend of mine seems quite successful running multiple blogs and working full time. I just haven’t figured out when he sleeps. :D

Believe me, I can totally relate to every single point you make throughout this entire post.

I write for dozens of my own sites and blogs, and edit articles for another site I manage. Creativity can be very hard to come by when one must shift gears repeatedly.

I find I work best when I focus on whatever area interests me at that moment and don’t try to force myself to produce content when I’m not inspired to write about the subject.

I do eventually find inspiration for all of them, otherwise I would have never registered the domains in the first place and started the respective sites and blogs. They’re all areas of interest to me, I’m just not interested in all of them all the time.

The trick is to find what modus opporendi works best for you and go with it.

I have two blogs right now and am starting a new one in February that I am excited about to a point.

I currently do most of my work on BluePop13.com as it’s my main blog and I get the most joy out of writing for it alone. I did buy a domain for my other two, one which I have not updated for about a month and am not sure what plans I actually have for it.

I plan on taking BluePop13.com to new levels as time progresses, however.

My recommendation is that if you can keep up and if you have strong enough goals for doing more than one, go for it! If not, re-think it.

    Very timely.

When I first started out I had multiple blogs which quickly became quite overwhelming. I narrowed it down to one main blog and a personal blog. This too became too much as I found it difficult to write for the personal blog.

I’ve had a lot of time to think since, and am going back to multiple blogs, at first just my main marketing blog and again a personal one…one realization I came to is, not only is the personal one good for writing everything you want to, but there really is no time frame.

Thanks Dennis I really appreciate your input, I have been thinking more and more about a personal blog and believe you are right in saying there is no time frame. My question to you is are you going to make it a subdomain or an entire new domain name?

  12. Dennis Edell on January 25, 2010 at 8:44 am

    Entirely new, always.

The subdomain is an interesting thought, but I’ve never heard of anyone doing that for a personal blog before.

The way I see it. Most that follow your business blog will follow your personal blog, to see more about YOU…

However, I think many that follow personal blogs for the sake of the personal side, may not be online for business…so I personally think it is better to promote them separately.

    That make sense?

  14. Dennis Edell on January 26, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Your welcome, I hope it helps. ;)

Side-note and please don’t take offense. You might want to change “admin” to something a little friendlier; at least maybe a nic name if you don’t want to use your own.

Just one of those minor details. :)

I run several blogs, and while at first I had time to post regularly on all of them things change and now time is somewhat lacking. What I do now is concentrate on three blogs and update the others when I have time.
