Fatal Error When Upgrading To WordPress 2.9.1

January 8, 2010
By Jenny

Yesterday I was having a mini freak-out when I could not upgrade my WordPress to 2.9.1.  I have run into worse, like losing my entire blog, but still none the less, I had been focused on this upgrading thing for quite awhile.

I was getting a fatal error every time I tried to upgrade, this was the error I was getting:

fatal error: allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2516315 bytes) in
wp-includes/http.php on line

I finally fixed it by searching around for a similar problem, it really was not a difficult fix and I will outline it below.  Before I go into the fix I would like to thank some people that tried to help me.  When you reach out with a question and people actually show a concern in trying to help you, you realize what people you should be networking with.

The people I would like to thank are John Sullivan and Crystal Gibbs Pina .  Both of these individuals answered my plea for help on Facebook, so I thank them both with much appreciation.

Now onto the fix, below are the steps I took to resolve the fatal error issue:

  1. I logged into my WordPress via FTP ( FileZilla)
  2. I opened the folder of the site I was having trouble with
  3. I then opened the wp-settings.php file with notepad
  4. I found the following line define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '32M') and changed the Memory Limit to 64M
  5. I saved the file as wp-settings1.txt then , uploaded it, and renamed it back to wp-settings.php

The memory was apparently the problem, however as I am just a NEWRU:) , I do not know why.  If anyone has any suggestions on why this was the problem or can explain to me why this happened I would be glad to hear from you!

Ah! this is common problem, it happened to me since a few months back regarding the last 2 upgrades, just put in your mind that you will need to do change this memory settings each time you upgrade your wordpress if they didn’t update it on their upgrade!!

    Thanks Hesham

I did not know that I may have to do this often, the way I discovered was quite easy, however do you know of a different way?

Don’t you hate it when shit like this happens? I’ve been lucky so far but I’ve read a few blogs where people have had problems with upgrades.

Reckon I will upgrade my test site first in furure just to make sure all goes well.

Test sites may not catch problems. I did a woman’s upgrade today, 3 sites on the same server. Two upgraded without a hitch. The third, I couldn’t login afterward. Got a fatal error. It took an hour and a half to restore the site (always export the XML file before an upgrade – you never know).

It just seems like 9.x is having problems all around.

Did all sites have the same theme and plugins?

Same plugins, different themes on all. I think the problem was the database because I downgraded the WordPress files to 2.8.5 and it required a database upgrade. 65 files refused to upload which is why I downgraded it. All the files uploaded on the other 2 sites. Once the database did it’s thing, the site upgraded just fine.

Cool. Would it be possible though that perhaps some of the plugins were no longer compatible with a particular theme after the upgrade.

I have no idea as this is all way over my head, but it seems a logical question.

It absolutely could be possible that it was a plugin that corrupted the database. I couldn’t login to the dashboard before I tried the upgrade. I always tell people not to use too many plugins and this is a good reason why. I usually say it because plugins slow a blog’s load time but this is another reason.

Hey Latief according to what I understand it is always a good idea to keep your wordpress upgraded, for security reason and bugs they work out from the old versions. As I said that is what I understand, however, some suggest that you wait a bit before upgrading to see what bugs the new version will have and then upgrade. After saying that, I go with the upgrade especially if you are not a wordpress guru, which I am not, there is always someone to assist if something goes wrong and if you backup your blog you should be okay.
