Previously I wrote a post entitled What Is the Google Analytics Bounce Rate? As the title may imply, this post explains how the Google Analytics measures the bounce rate of visitors to your site. In that post I also stated that I would write a post on how you can lower your Google Analytics bounce rate. In this post I will touch on a few simple fixes that I have found that you can apply immediately to lower your bounce rate at your site.

Most bloggers know that writing engaging posts that can keep your reader interested will make them want to know more about what other knowledge you may have to offer. Keeping your content fresh, entertaining and informational are some of the most obvious ways to lower your bounce rate. Besides site content, I stated that there were some “quick fixes” that you could implement immediately. Most of these techniques have to do with simple plugins you can easily install into you blogs.

The first plugin is called the Related Post plugin. The Related Post plugin allows posts that are similar to the one being read to show up at the bottom of that post page. By using this feature, it will give your reader more related content to on what they were looking for and keeps them on your site. A good example of this is when you are watching a youtube video and you see all the other videos at the side. Many times those other videos are clicked hence keeping visitors on the site for a longer period of time.

Another great plugin is called Popularity Contest. This plugin will show your most popular site posts in the sidebar. You simply install this plugin and it creates a widget that is placed in your sidebar, it then ranks your most popular posts by percentages.

A final plugin is the My Top Commentators plugin. This plugin also creates a widget that is placed in your sidebar that shows your most frequent people that comment on your blog. People love to get traffic for their own blog; therefore many strive to be a top commentator on others blogs. By using the My Top Commentator plugin it not only keeps them there longer due to the comment they make, but in many cases causes them to return to be the top commentator.

One final way to lower your bounce rate that does not use a plugin is by using internal linking. By linking to a previous post, such as I did in this post, within a post will keep visitors on your site longer as well. By doing this you cause the visitor to read what you have written in the other posts to get a full overview of what the current post is about.
These are some very simple techniques but you should not underestimate them. By putting these practices in place you can improve not only your readers’ visits but also lower your bounce rate at the same time.

How to Survive Your First Year of Blogging

Did you know that more than 90% of all new bloggers who try to money blogging quit within the first 12 months. How do you avoid becoming one of them?

While blogging for fun and to communicate with like-minded souls is an enjoyable process, blogging with the intention of making money can quite stressful.

Most new bloggers I’ve met attempt to jump right into heavy topics like search engine optimization, link building, paid reviews and ad sales, completely ignoring the three important things they need to survive their first year of blogging.

So what are the three most things you should know about blogging?

1 – Determine If You Really Need a Blog

Yeah, that’s right. Why should you choose to blog, where there are a hundred other easier (or faster) ways to make money online? Blogs take a long time to turn around any decent profit, if there is any profit to be made in the first place.

Will you keep writing, day after day, if you are only making $20 a month from your blog?

In many aspects, the blogging business model is similar to traditional print media like magazines and newspapers. The top-paying advertisers only show up at your door when you have lots (and I mean lots) of eyeballs. That can take weeks, months or even years.

Start a blog only if you’re passionate about the topic, not because you’re desperate to make some money. Your blog visitors can feel your desperation no matter how hard you try to hide it, and they will get turned off.

2 – Figure Out How You’re Going to Make Money First

Yes, take out a piece of paper, and on it write “How I’m Going to Make Money from This Blog”. Under that, jot down the most probable monetization methods for your blog before you even register your domain name.

This will force you to do more research on the niche market you want to approach. Compare your ideas to what other are doing to see if they are viable. If you find too little options, you may want to consider a different topic.

3 – Don’t Bother with The Technical Stuff

The technical stuff will bog you down and eventually divert your attention from revenue generating activities. Let me explain what I mean.

A typical blogger would decide to use WordPress as his blogging platform. Although WordPress is free, it’s an open-source software that provides you with no direct support channels. You’re on your own as far as technical matters are concerned, and the only thing you can fall back on is online documentation and perhaps some kind people at the forum.

For the most part however, it’s going to be rather difficult for you to grab themes and plugins and put them together to create the type of blog that you really want.

There’s a big chance you’ll get distracted by stuff like hacking codes and tweaking the CSS styles.

Here’s a tip: Learn to make do with less. Forget the bells and whistles.

Writing great content and communicating with readers should be your real focus right from the start. Outsource the technical tasks to someone else and you’ll achieve your income goals much faster.

You see, to get through your first year of blogging you don;t need to do more; just more of the stuff that makes you money.

You’re a blogger, not a webmaster. Start thinking and behaving like one, and when you do the smoke clear to reveal your path to a successful blogging business.
