Your Blog As A Community

I currently live in a very small town of about 3,500 but grew up in a town of about 100,000.  While going through the things I disliked about small town living the other day some interesting thoughts came into my mind.

The town 3,500 population town is very closely knit.  It seems that almost everyone is into the games and activities of the town.  The 100,000 town that I grew up in there were different things going on all the time, therefore you could always find someone, or something different to do.

It occurred to me that this is much like a blog.  Your blog should be a small knit community all sharing the same goals and ideas.  Those who comment on your blog you should try to get to know.  You can do this by commenting back, visiting their site, and commenting on their site.

The larger town is the blogosphere, where you have an infinite number of choices of blogs you can read.  It can be looked at as the larger town of 100,000 or more than likely greater.

Just like any small town, people have a tendency to know one another and therefore things can spread easily.  The same can be said for your blog.  If you have a group of positive readers that are learning from you then you will more then likely have good news spreading about you.  If you are constantly trying to promote something and never trying to help anyone with the knowledge you gain, you may become the outcast.

It is important to remember that your blog no matter what the topic is there for your readers as well as yourself.  You want to make friends and have good news spread about you, just as you would in any small town.  As for the larger town, the blogosphere, your job is to make an impact on it, put yourself on the map as one of the activities that someone should attend.

Great article, it made a lot of sense. I did notice the people that comment on my blog are the ones I most read and comment on their blogs.
