Do It Right The First Time

When I first started blogging there were many things I did not do right the first time.  If I would have known or taken the time to set things up correctly then I would not have spent as much time as I have correcting the issues.

I have gotten emails that have asked me the same questions about setting up and correcting issues.  Although many of these things seem simple, many get so excited about blogging or getting up and running that they ignore the obvious, much like I did.

Here are a few tips to do now whether you have a blog or are just starting out.  They may seem simple but they make a world of difference with your time management if you do them now.

Your domain name email addresses have to be set up the correct way , for example do you want it to be admin, or your name etc.  Then set up your forwarding, do you plan to log in to your hosting account to check?  A much easier way is to set up your forwarding to your primary email addresses.

While on the subject of email addresses, many people have more then one.  The best way I have found for organization of email addresses is to designate each one for a particular topic.  For example,  I have one for affiliate programs, another for blogs I like to read, and so on.

Catagories in your blog are very important.  I had messy categories on many of my blogs and on some I still do.  One thing to remember is that many people navigate through blogs by the categories, so making sure each post is assigned to the correct category is crucial.

Last but definitely not least are logins and passwords.  Keeping track of them can be a bear if you are using a password management system like roboform.  Roboform is a great tool and does a great job managing your logins.  However if anything were to happen to your system and you don’t have a back up with your passwords you could be up a creek.  I suggest writing each one of them down the old fashioned way with paper and pen or of course saving them to a disk.  I have done both.

There are many other organizational issues that may come up, these are just the issues I have worked with myself recently.  Correcting them now or before you start a new blog or site can save you quite the headache.
