What Is The Difference Between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

This difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org was one of the many questions I had when I first started website development and blogging. I continued to get the same question from others who were creating their sites too, so I thought I would address it.

WordPress.com is a hosted way to create a blog or website. What that means is there in no need for downloads and installations. Your site is hosted by WordPress. WordPress.org is a self-hosted option, which basically means you need to purchase web-hosting and a domain name. With WordPress.com your site would look like this http://www.mysite.wordpress.com and with WordPress.org is would look like http://www.mysite.com.

With WordPress.com although it takes the tech stress out, there are limits, you have fewer themes and cannot add plugins, which give you a custom look. That being said what are plugins? In short they are add-ons that allow you do many different things from backing up your files, creating a certain look on your site, to thousands of other things. To get more information on plugins you can go here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins.

There are many tutorials online to help explain the WordPress World, however if you are serious about knowing about and creating a WordPress site I would recommend getting WordPress for Dummies. It is a great resource and good to have in your hands when creating a site.
